Samsung Washing Machine Rubber Smell – Jacobs Well

Samsung Washing Machine Rubber Smell – Jacobs Well

A customer in Jacobs Well contacted ISB Electrical because their Samsung washing machine had a strong rubber smell during the cycle. The customer noticed the smell became worse when the drum was rotating, especially during faster movement.

A rubber or burning smell from a washing machine should not be ignored. It can be caused by a drive belt issue, overloaded machine, seized bearing, damaged drum support, worn door gasket or the inner drum rubbing against the rubber seal.

Inspection and Diagnosis

  • Checked the washing machine power supply and safety condition
  • Inspected the front rubber door gasket for rubbing marks
  • Checked the inner drum movement by hand
  • Tested the washing machine during wash and spin movement
  • Confirmed the drum was touching the rubber gasket during operation
  • Checked for excessive bowl movement and imbalance
  • Inspected the drum support condition
  • Confirmed the mechanical fault before advising repair options

Fault Found

The fault was caused by a damaged and bent spider support arm. The support arm was no longer holding the inner drum correctly, causing the bowl to become unbalanced and move out of alignment.

During the cycle, the drum was touching the front rubber gasket. This caused friction between the rotating drum and the rubber seal, creating the strong rubber smell.

Repair Required

This type of fault is a major mechanical repair. The damaged spider support arm and affected drum assembly components require replacement or further assessment depending on the model, part availability and condition of the tub and bearings.

The customer was advised not to continue using the washing machine, because ongoing rubbing can damage the rubber gasket, create further imbalance, damage the tub and place extra stress on the motor and bearings.

Common Causes of Rubber Smell From a Washing Machine

  • Inner drum rubbing on the rubber door gasket
  • Damaged or bent spider support arm
  • Unbalanced drum or bowl movement
  • Worn drum bearings
  • Damaged door seal or gasket
  • Overloaded washing machine
  • Drive belt slipping or overheating
  • Internal mechanical damage during spin cycle

Samsung Washing Machine Rubber Smell FAQ

Why does my Samsung washing machine smell like rubber?

A Samsung washing machine may smell like rubber if the drum is rubbing against the door gasket, the drive belt is slipping, the machine is overloaded, the bearings are worn or the drum support is damaged.

Can a damaged spider support arm cause the drum to rub on the rubber gasket?

Yes. If the spider support arm is damaged or bent, the inner drum can move out of alignment and touch the rubber door gasket during the wash or spin cycle.

Should I keep using my washing machine if the drum is rubbing?

No. If the drum is touching the rubber gasket, the washing machine should not be used until inspected. Continued use can damage the gasket, tub, bearings, motor and other internal parts.
