Westinghouse Fridge Water Leaking in Runaway Bay
ISB Electrical attended a Westinghouse refrigerator repair job in Runaway Bay where the customer reported water collecting underneath the vegetable drawers and leaking inside the fridge compartment.
Water leaks inside Westinghouse refrigerators are commonly caused by blocked defrost drains, frozen drain tubes or excessive ice build-up around the evaporator section.
Customer Complaint
The customer noticed water repeatedly appearing underneath the crisper drawers. Even after cleaning the water away, it would return within a few days.
The refrigerator was still cooling normally, however water was pooling at the bottom of the fresh food compartment.
Diagnosis
We removed the internal rear evaporator cover and inspected the drain trough, drain tube and evaporator compartment.
Large amounts of ice had formed around the drain area and the defrost water was unable to flow correctly through the drain tube.
Fault Found
The defrost drain was blocked. During the automatic defrost cycle, water could not drain to the evaporation tray near the compressor.
Instead, the water overflowed inside the refrigerator compartment and accumulated underneath the vegetable drawers.
Repair Carried Out
The blocked drain was cleared, ice build-up was removed and the complete drainage path was tested. The refrigerator was then checked to confirm proper water flow during defrost operation.
