Westinghouse Fridge Not Defrosting in Robina
ISB Electrical attended a Westinghouse refrigerator repair job in Robina where the customer reported poor cooling performance and unusual fan noise coming from inside the fridge.
Westinghouse refrigerators rely on an automatic defrost system to remove ice from the evaporator. When the system fails, ice builds up around the evaporator and fan assembly, eventually affecting cooling performance.
Customer Complaint
The customer noticed that the refrigerator section was becoming warmer than normal. A scraping noise could also be heard from inside the appliance, particularly during fan operation.
Diagnosis
We removed the internal rear evaporator cover and inspected the evaporator, fan motor, defrost thermostat, heater circuit and drainage system.
Heavy ice build-up was found around the evaporator assembly. The evaporator fan blade was striking the ice, causing the noise reported by the customer.
Fault Found
Testing confirmed that the defrost thermostat was faulty and not allowing the automatic defrost system to operate correctly.
As a result, ice continued to accumulate around the evaporator coil and fan assembly. Eventually the fan blade became partially stuck in the ice, reducing airflow through the refrigerator.
Repair Carried Out
The evaporator area was fully defrosted, the fan assembly was inspected and the faulty defrost thermostat was identified. The customer was advised regarding replacement of the defective component.
