ISB Electrical attended a Westinghouse refrigerator repair job in Coomera where the customer reported a loud fan noise coming from inside the fridge.
The noise was caused by the evaporator fan touching ice build-up behind the internal rear panel. This usually happens when the defrost system is not clearing ice properly or when the drain system becomes blocked.
The customer noticed a scraping or grinding noise while the fridge was running. The noise was coming from inside the refrigerator compartment and became worse as ice continued to build up.
We removed the internal rear cover and inspected the evaporator area, fan blade clearance, defrost system and drain channel.
The evaporator area had excessive ice build-up and the fan blades were touching the ice during operation.
The fridge had a defrost fault and a blocked drain. Because defrost water could not drain away correctly, ice accumulated around the evaporator and fan assembly.
As the fan operated, the blades touched the ice and created the noise reported by the customer.
The ice build-up was cleared, the drain was unblocked and the defrost system was checked. The evaporator fan was inspected to confirm it was not damaged by contact with the ice.
If the fan continues hitting ice, the fan motor can become damaged and airflow through the fridge can be restricted. This may lead to poor cooling, temperature instability and food spoilage.
