Samsung Fridge Fan Noise in Upper Coomera
ISB Electrical attended a Samsung refrigerator repair job in Upper Coomera where the customer reported an intermittent grinding and scraping noise coming from inside the fridge compartment.
The customer noticed that the noise would immediately stop whenever the refrigerator door was opened, but would return shortly after the door was closed again.
Customer Complaint
The refrigerator was still cooling, however an annoying noise was coming from behind the rear internal panel. The customer was concerned that the fan motor or compressor was failing.
Diagnosis
We inspected the evaporator compartment, evaporator fan motor, defrost heater circuit, thermofuse, temperature sensor and surrounding airflow passages.
Because Samsung refrigerators stop the evaporator fan when the door switch opens, the fact that the noise stopped when the door was opened immediately pointed towards a fan-related problem.
Fault Found
Heavy ice build-up had formed around the evaporator assembly. The evaporator fan blades were striking the ice whenever the fan operated, creating the grinding noise reported by the customer.
Further testing found that the defrost thermofuse was open circuit. Because the defrost system could not operate correctly, ice continued accumulating around the evaporator and fan assembly.
Repair Carried Out
The evaporator section was defrosted, the fan assembly was inspected and the faulty thermofuse was identified. The customer was advised regarding the required repair to restore correct automatic defrost operation.
