Fisher & Paykel Fridge Not Defrosting in Coomera

ISB Electrical attended a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator repair job in Coomera after the customer reported poor cooling performance and excessive ice build-up inside the freezer compartment.

The refrigerator section was becoming warmer than normal and food was no longer staying cold. The customer also noticed weak airflow from the vents and frost build-up behind the rear freezer panel.

Customer Complaint

The customer advised that the freezer was still partly cold, but the fridge compartment temperature was unstable. The appliance appeared to run for long periods, however cooling performance was poor.

Diagnosis

We removed the evaporator cover and inspected the evaporator assembly, freezer fan motor, defrost heater, defrost sensor and control system.

The evaporator was found completely covered in ice. The heavy ice build-up restricted normal airflow and prevented the freezer fan from circulating cold air correctly through the refrigerator.

Electrical testing was carried out on the defrost heater and defrost sensor to determine why the automatic defrost cycle was not operating correctly.

Fault Found

The defrost heater tested OK and showed normal operation during electrical testing.

Further testing confirmed that the defrost sensor was faulty and not providing accurate temperature information to the control board.

Because the refrigerator could not correctly monitor evaporator temperature, the automatic defrost cycle was affected. This allowed heavy ice accumulation on the evaporator and restricted airflow through the freezer fan area.

Repair Carried Out

The evaporator was fully defrosted and the accumulated ice was removed from the freezer compartment.

The faulty defrost sensor was identified as the cause of the problem and replacement was recommended to restore proper automatic defrost operation.

After the ice was cleared, airflow through the evaporator and fan area was restored.

Why Defrost Sensors Are Important

Fisher & Paykel refrigerators rely on a defrost sensor to monitor evaporator temperature during the automatic defrost cycle.

When the sensor fails, the control system may not start or finish the defrost cycle correctly. This allows frost and ice to accumulate around the evaporator until airflow becomes restricted and cooling performance is affected.
